9th Graders Mean Business

Class of 2014- Isaiah Whitehead (NY) was one of Middle School Elite’s first features.  Last year, his AAU team Juice All Stars 14u finished 5th in the nation.  Now, he’s a freshman on varsity at Lincoln high school in Brooklyn, NY.

Not only is he a starting five with good upside, he’s frequently pictured and written about by Daily News Sports.

Whitehead will be attending the MSE National Basketball Camp March 2011.

Shavar Newkirk is finally at his dream high school located in Harlem, NY. He lives within walking distance, a sixteen block radius.

He’s a student athlete who keeps a pair of ball kicks and of course books inside his back pack!

Newkirk’s rank should go up this year to a top 20 player in the nation. He’s widely considered the best player in NY for the class of 2014, behind Isaiah Whitehead.

Rice High School is where Coach Maurice Hicks produced Edgar Sosa, Kemba Walker (Pic left/below), and most recently Kadeem Jack (Pic right) of Rutgers University. The Rebirth is with the New Varsity Coach Dwayne Mitchell and his first recruit Shavar Newkirk aka “Mecca”.

We saw Shavar at age 11, when he played for Coach Mark Jerome/Riverside Hawks. Today, Newkirk is one of the most talked about high school freshman’s in New York City basketball history.

Shavar Newkirk’s new video features Felipe Lopez, a former Rice and NBA player. Lopez made the front cover of  Sports Illustrated‘s Nov. 24, 1994 issue.

Dakari Johnson Lexington, KY AAU Team Gauchos

Dakari Johnson, is a 6’6″ big name freshman center in high school basketball. Johnson attends St. Patrick high school in New Jersey according to a ESPN college recruiting report.

Johnson showcased his talent at the Clay Dade Jr. All American Camps, which gave him the platform to impress scouts and coaches across  America. This Spring he rank #1 at the John Lucas Middle School Combine Camp in Houston, Texas. In  October, to end his summer ball, he’ll be at the John Lucas Southwest Invitational Camp in Louisville,  Kentucky.

We had the chance to watch Dakari play several times in New York, Texas and very soon Kentucky.

Isiah Whitehead NYC

Isaiah Whitehead is a 6’2 shooting point guard freshman at Abraham Lincoln, one of the top public high schools in New York.  Its located in Coney Island Brooklyn, the home of Stephan Marbury, Sebastian Telfair and Lance Stephenson, the highest scorer in his State HS history.

We saw Coach Dwayne (Tiny) Morton of  Lincoln HS just a few weeks ago at the ‘Ball By The Beach’ Tournament.  While a championship basketball game went on next to him, he played  Scrabble with some young at heart parents who had their focus in more places than one.

As some players fought to get baskets, others used letters to scramble for points.

Is it more fun playing Scrabble or Basketball?

It was interesting to see Coach Morton interacting in the community and participating in a educational mind challenging activity.  Someone kept score and they relied on a dictionary to verify usage of words.

We sure got the best of both worlds, basketball and Scrabble, played at the same time.
